We Bought a Jeep... So We Took It to the Woods!

We took delivery of our 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara on Wednesday, and by the weekend there was really only one sensible thing to do with a Hella Yella Wrangler: get out of town, put the top down, and take the family into the woods.

Exactly why we bought the Jeep

This was not supposed to be a hardcore wheeling trip. The whole point was to get the family outside, drop the top, explore a little, and enjoy a vehicle that can turn an ordinary Saturday into an excuse to go somewhere interesting.

Prentice Cooper is close enough to Chattanooga to make that easy. We could spend the day in the woods, get some dirt on the Jeep, and still keep the trip relaxed. That is exactly the kind of thing we had in mind when we bought it.

Keeping the first trip sensible

The Jeep is still basically stock. There is no lift, no rock sliders, and no real trail build hiding underneath it. It does have all-terrain tires, but it is also our daily driver and I have no interest in finding its limits by damaging it during the first week we own it.

We also did not have a riding buddy with us and did not have a proper trail map. Between that and still learning what this particular JL can comfortably handle, we stayed mostly on the main route and kept the off-roading very light.

The hard part was driving past the side trails

I am used to built Jeep XJs, so the instinct to turn down every interesting side trail is still very much there. Passing them up was probably the hardest part of the day.

But this Jeep has a different job. Before we start pushing farther into the woods, I want a better feel for the vehicle, a proper map, another vehicle along for the ride when it makes sense, and enough basic protection that a fun afternoon does not become an expensive lesson.

A really good first day out

Nothing broke, nobody got stuck, and we did not need a recovery story to make the day memorable. We just had the top down, the family together, dirt under the tires, and plenty of Tennessee woods around us.

That may not make for the wildest Jeep story, but it was a pretty perfect first outing. More importantly, it confirmed that we bought the Wrangler for the right reason. We wanted something that could make family trips and ordinary weekends more fun, and this one already has.

Next time

There will be more Jeep trips as we learn the Sahara and figure out what upgrades actually make sense for the way we use it. I am not trying to turn the daily driver into a dedicated rock crawler, but a little more protection, better trail information, and some sensible capability upgrades will open up more of the places I had to drive past this time.
